Liz

Liz collapsed on the bed. This was a terrible idea.

She’d agreed to the trial with the West Coast Wardens on a whim. She’d needed some time to clear her head after her last terrible idea.

She’d had sex with her assistant. In their shared office.

And they’d gotten caught. She was never going to be able to look Jeff in the eyes again. She hadn’t even been able to bring herself to answer his increasingly concerned text messages and voicemails.

So here she was. Running away from her problems, like a coward.

At least the Wardens’ compound was snazzy. It was out in the middle of the desert, with its own airstrip and training facilities, and the personal areas were impersonal but extravagant. The bed Liz had been given was big enough for three of her, and the bathroom had a waterfall shower with special settings for washing off the various gunk and goo that came from villain fights.

The Wardens seemed to spend almost all of their time together. The schedule posted in the common area suggested that each of them only took a few days a month off, away from the compound. Captain Thunderbolt, the team leader, didn’t even seem to take that much time away. The rest of the time, they worked together, trained together, even ate most of their meals together.

Liz could respect the work ethic, but that was a lot of togetherness.

Just as she was thinking this, someone knocked on her door.

“Come in!” Liz called.

Kaylee, also known as G-Force, poked her head inside. “Liz! How are you doing so far?”

“Pretty good?” Liz offered.

“That’s great!” Kaylee clapped her hands together. “I’m so glad to have you here. We need more women on this team! It’s just been me and Wren— that’s Phoenix— for way too long— have you talked to her yet?”

Liz had known that G-Force had a reputation for being chipper. She hadn’t realized that was more than just a public persona.

“We’ve only spoken in passing so far,” Liz finally said, referring to Wren.

“You’ll love her. Everyone does! I know she seems intimidating but she’s just the nicest person I know.”

Liz knew of plenty of friendships between seemingly opposite personalities— just look at her and Jeff— but it still amused her to try and picture those two: cheery, pink-haired Kaylee and quiet, leather jacket-wearing Wren.

She was still trying to think of a reply when an alarm sounded.

“That’s the mission alarm,” Kaylee said, suddenly serious. “Better suit up.”

* * *

The fight had been easy. The villain would probably have given Liz trouble if she’d been on her own, but when working with four of the best heroes in the region? It took minutes, at most. Unfortunately, those minutes had still been enough for her to get entirely covered in dust from a collapsed wall.

Talking to the press afterward had taken longer. One more reason not to join the Wardens permanently; Liz disliked dealing with the press back in Taylor Beach, and that was small-time compared to the kind of breathless coverage the Wardens got.
